German Greeting Wie Gehts

Landscape of The Fatherland

As a formal German greeting, Wie Gehts my friends. By central European standards, Germany is a large country of 137,735 square miles. From north to south it measures 540 miles. From east to west, 390. Its northern coastline is 574 miles long and is accesible from the North Sea as well as from the Baltic Sea. The land in the north is low and somewhat of a flat plain by comparison to the southern regions of the country which are mountainous.

The lowland in the north is part of the North German Plain. It rises gradually to meet the Bavarian Alps in the south. At less than 500 feet of altitude, the region is dotted with many marshes. The southern edge of this plain is rich farm land. The upland has lower mountain ranges with elevations as high as 3,200 feet. This upland area rises to meet the Apls, where peaks are as high as 9,721 feet.

Map of Germany

Germany is drained by two major waterways; the Rhine begins in the Swiss Alps and flows for 865 miles to the North Sea. It is one of the world's largest rivers. The Danube originates in the Black Forest of southwestern Germany and from there flows northeast, then southeast towards Austria and the Black Sea. The largest lake in the country is Lake Constance near the southern border which is shared by Austria and Switzerland.

The German people enjoy a mild climate. West winds from the sea warm the land in winter and cool it in summer. During the coldest month of the year, January, the temperature is usually above 30 degrees Farenheight. The hottest month, July, has an average temperature of 64 degrees Farenheight.

In addition to Switzerland and Austria, Germany also shares borders with Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, the Czech Republic, and Poland. The present population of the Federal Republic of Germany is about 83 million. The three largest cities are Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich. Tourists love the land and people of Germany. Its citizens are known the world over for their intelligence, charm, and generous welcoming manner.

Brushing up on your German might not be a bad idea. Wherever you plan to go in Germany, whether it is the Black Forest, the Central Highlands, the Bavarian Alps, the Northern Plain or the beautiful Blue Danube, you will not be disappointed. Enrich your spirit by sampling some of the wonder of this magnificent country and its language.
